The really hilariously ill-conceived part of the Twitter rate limiting thing is that comments and retweets are the same kind of entity as tweets in the back-end database, they're just "parented" to whatever tweet they're commenting on or retweeting, and the rate limit they've placed on the API simply counts how many of those entities you've requested without checking a. whether they're the children of another entity or not, nor b. whether you've already seen that particular entity today.

Thus, the limit isn't really "600 tweets". A tweet, each comment on that tweet, and each retweet of that tweet all count against the limit as you view them. For example, if a quote-retweet crosses your dashboard, the quote-retweet itself and the little preview of what it's responding to that appears above it each count separately against the limit. Click into that quote-retweet to read the comments? They both get counted against your limit a second time, as does each individual comment you read – and heaven help you if any of those comments were themselves commented upon!

The upshot is that if your account isn't verified, using Twitter in the manner that its own monetisation model assumes – and, indeed demands – it will be used can easily exhaust your entire daily allocation of tweet views in as little as a couple dozen engagements.

so that’s why i ran out in like two hours

prokopetz

If anything, two hours reflects a very restrained usage pattern. Owing to the way that tweet views are counted, somebody who's using the site the way its user experience "wants" it to be used might readily burn through their daily 600 views in five to ten minutes!

Wait, wait, wait, so, Twitter now works like those mobile games that give you free "lives" and once you're out, sorry! Wait til tomorrow... or pay!

prokopetz

It's a bit worse than that, because the verified limit is only 6000 views, and there's presently no way to increase it beyond that. That might feel like a big number, but for the reasons outlined above, even a paying user with an ideal usage pattern will be able to use site for perhaps 60 minutes a day before they get put on hold, too.

Apparently now you can claim hypothetical harm to spin up a case that will go to the supreme court and get the justices to legislate from the bench. Lorie Smith didn't even receive a request to make the website in question until after she filed suit and, on top of this already suspicious origin of the request, the gay man who filed the request for a website doesn't even exist. In reality, the man the contact info points to is a married straight man who claims he was impersonated. We have a SCOTUS case where the claim is bogus and seems like it was completely falsified just to give the case the slightest legitimacy as well as no actual harm done to the defendant, and despite all this, SCOTUS did not throw out the case. The conservative majority is so blatantly corrupt

They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.

More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. You can follow what is happening at their Twitter.

"When people talk about gender-affirming surgery using words like “mutilation,” that's not very nice. Is that how you think about people who've had surgery for other things? It's a disgust reaction, and I do not take disgust into account as a legitimate point of discourse. I don't have to entertain it and I'm not going to. It's a waste of everybody's time, it's knee-jerk, it's not grounded in reality, and it's not useful. And it's a squeamishness about medical intervention. I think the idea of making legislative or cultural decisions in and around [that] is laughable. Your squeamishness is not what the world turns on; it doesn't matter."

look, not to be a downer, but... why are we making omegaverse jokes about this.

this article is about how Ron DeSantis is leveraging people's hatred for trans men to fundraise for his presidential campaign:

DeSantis has leaned heavily into the culture war issues — which have become central to his campaign — such as the repeated emails mocking the idea of men getting pregnant. Some transgender men do become pregnant. DeSantis also sent more emails mentioning “woke” than any other candidate.

I know people love "haha omegaverse" jokes but. I REALLY need people to realize that its a microagression against trans men. Pregnant men can face extreme amounts of transphobia, and are in a highly vulnerable situation, and they are being used as a symbol of wokeness by Florida's fascist wannabe. And it makes me upset to see other trans people seeming to not take this seriously.

Like. ask yourselves why "pregnant men" immediately conjures jokes and absurdity to you, instead of real people that exist and who Ron DeSantis hates? When you see "pregnant man" and your first thoughts are omegaverse porn and "cis men getting pregnant," you are also mocking the idea of men getting pregnant. And you do so while erasing trans men from the conversation. You make male pregnancy into an absurdist joke about cis men instead of a reality for trans men.

There doesn't seem to be a single person in the notes of this post who has mentioned trans men. Its just jokes about heat suppressants. People acted shocked and bewildered by the idea of a pregnant man. On "the trans website." That fucking hurts.

A pregnant trans man was very recently on the cover of a magazine & received a ton of backlash. Pregnant men are accused of child abuse & child molestation for simply being a trans father, and I've seen many people specifically say that trans fathers who have been/are on T will "poison" their children. Ignorance about men being pregnant can have real fatal consequences. Transphobia make it a traumatizing process. Pregnant trans men face workplace discrimination. Trans men who are pregnant are in heavy contact with the transphobic medical system which leaves them extremely vulnerable to abuse. This doesn't even get into trans men and abortion access. There are already people who think pregnant trans men need to have their children taken away. Ron DeSantis is using them specifically to foster hatred and get money. This is serious.

I cannot feel safe around people for whom "pregnant man" is nothing but an absurdist punchline. It hurts to see other trans people erasing transmascs from the discussion, especially when this article is SPECIFICALLY about how DeSantis is emailing people to say "hey, don't you think pregnant "men" are delusional and a threat to American society? Me too! Give me money so I can terrorize them via the government!" This is not the first time I've seen people do this with pregnant men (immediately jumping to "haha pregnant cis men!! omegaverse!!" jokes without even mentioning trans men at all. Even though we are men that can and do get pregnant. In real life. And are abused for it) but its the first time I've seen it done in response to a very clear act of targeted anti-transmasculinity, and this. Hurts.

I don't know how y'all think you can combat transphobia if you can't take seriously the issue of male pregnancy. Because transphobes are clearly very interesting in using pregnant men as a weapon, and I would hope y'all would step up for them. We have to acknowledge that the "haha thats so weird and absurd and gross!!!" response to male pregnancy is transphobic and it hurts trans men a lot.

i am so sick of people on the news saying that student loan relief will cost over $400 billion dollars; that's just not true.

you know how much student loan relief costs? $0

we are not *spending* money to cancel student loan debt. this is future revenue that would not be collected borrowers, and it's far from some guaranteed income stream. saying student loan relief is a cost is bad accounting at best, and downright malicious at worst. it's also completely missing the point of *why* we're trying to cancel student loan debt.

PEOPLE CAN'T PAY BACK THEIR LOANS

demanding all this money from people who don't have it isn't suddenly going to make that money materialize. people still can't pay, and the government still won't be receiving the bulk of that $400 billion. loans have been paused for years now, and it's not like this supposed drop in revenue has meaningfully affected budgets in any way. if we've been getting on fine without it, we'd continue to get on fine without debt payments.

by reinstituting these debt payments, we'll see much greater costs as students and families go bankrupt and are further set beck. that's the true cost of student loans.

Pretend, for example, that you were born in Chicago and have never had the remotest desire to visit Hong Kong, which is only a name on a map for you; pretend that some convulsion, sometimes called accident, throws you into connection with a man or a woman who lives in Hong Kong; and that you fall in love. Hong Kong will immediately cease to be a name and become the center of your life. And you may never know how many people live in Hong Kong. But you will know that one man or one woman lives there without whom you cannot live. And this is how our lives are changed, and this is how we are redeemed.

What a journey this life is! Dependent, entirely, on things unseen. If your lover lives in Hong Kong and cannot get to Chicago, it will be necessary for you to go to Hong Kong. Perhaps you will spend your life there, and never see Chicago again. And you will, I assure you, as long as space and time divide you from anyone you love, discover a great deal about shipping routes, airlines, earth quake, famine, disease, and war. And you will always know what time it is in Hong Kong, for you love someone who lives there. And love will simply have no choice but to go into battle with space and time and, furthermore, to win.
